Foodservice market to grow by 6.1% to reach value of €8.2 billion

Ireland's foodservice market is set to grow by 6.1% this year, according to a new report by Bord Bia - with the industry in line to reach a value of €8.2 billion. Glanbia acquires SlimFast for $350 million

Global nutrition group Glanbia has confirmed plans to acquire well-known weight-loss and health brand Slim Fast and its associated trademarks in a €350m deal. BWG plans major expansion of Spar and Eurospar

Retailing group BWG is to add 45 new Spar and Eurospar stores over the next two years, employing 1,000 staff. Along with franchisees in its Spar/Eurospar store network, it also plans to invest €25 million in store refurbishments. The changes are part of a new strategy for BWG’s Spar network, and its larger-format Eurospar brand. Lidl breaks ground on new distribution centre

Work has commenced on the brand new Lidl Distribution Centre in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, a year-long project that will see up to 2,000 construction jobs created along with 100 full-time roles on completion. Lidl has commenced work on its new Distribution Centre in Newbridge, Co. Donnybrook Fair to be acquired by Musgraves

Retailer Musgrave says it has agreed to acquire Donnybrook Fair for an undisclosed sum. The deal is subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. The acquisition includes Donnybrook Fair's five food stores in Donnybrook, Stillorgan, Malahide, Greystones and Baggot Street as well as a gourmet food production facility. Tesco UK’s new discount chain Jack’s takes on Aldi and Lidl

Tesco has unveiled its new discount chain called Jack's that aims to tackle the rising threat posed by German rivals Aldi and Lidl. Coca-Cola to buy Costa coffee for £3.9bn

Coca-Cola is to buy the Costa coffee chain from owner Whitbread in a deal worth £3.9bn. Whitbread had intended to spin off the chain as a separate firm, but said a straight sale was more profitable. Chief executive Alison Brittain said Whitbread would now focus on its Premier Inn business in the UK and Germany. Irish Distillers sees further growth for Jameson

Irish Distillers, which owns the Jameson Whiskey brand, released full-year financial results this morning. It said Jameson sales rose by 14% in value and 12% in volume terms in the 12 months to June, with the whiskey now in double or triple-digit growth in more than 80 markets across the world. CO2 gas shortage could hit beer, fizzy drinks production

Some of the country's 100 microbreweries could be forced to shut down and lay off employees next week due to a shortage of CO2 gas which is essential to beer production. Patricia Callan of the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland said a Europe-wide shortage of food grade CO2 is now beginning to hit Ireland and it is an essential product for packaging beer and cider. Dealz Irish Expansion: 20 New Stores On The Way

According to discount retailer Dealz, 300,000 customers visit its 53 Irish stores every week. Dealz which is owned by British discount giant Poundland, plans to open up to 20 new stores around Ireland in the coming year, as it says that some 300,000 Irish customers now pay a visit to its stores every week. Women Shoppers Are Impulsive While Men Snap Up Bargains

According to the new survey, women are more likely to make impulsive purchasing decisions. However, male shoppers tend to snap up special offers, with a high chance of switching brands.
